Special Events

Toast and Taste, Thursday, October 19 at 6 PM – 9 PM

Hay House board and staff are pleased to again host Toast & Taste at Hay House, a singular opportunity to share the expanse of Georgia wineries, distillers, and brewers, as well as the cuisine of Macon’s restaurants, caterers, and its best amateur chefs. This festive affair will benefit the operations, preservation efforts, and educational offerings of Hay House, Macon’s 1855 National Landmark House on Georgia Avenue, known by many as the “Palace of the South.”

This exceptional culinary and auction event will boast tastings from Macon restaurants and caterers. Top wines from Georgia Distributors will again join the products of Georgia wineries, breweries, and producers of spirits such as vodka, rum, bourbon, and rye. The Tastes and Toasts will again fill the grand rooms on the Main level of Hay House.

One of Macon’s finest live auctions will punctuate the evening, featuring private performances by world-renowned musicians, special meals with great chefs in historic houses, weekend getaways, and other items offered for competitive bidding. A rousing raffle will feature the widely acclaimed Big Green Egg ceramic grill and numerous items and gift certificates; all constituting a big giveaway for the lucky winner!

Legends and Lore Tour, Monday, October 30 at 5 PM – 8 PM

Since the Georgia Trust acquired this landmark in 1978, consultants, staff, workmen, and even visitors have told of spine-tingling experiences ranging from odd sounds, to mysterious problems with lights and doors, and to actual sightings of apparitions. Although we traditionally have been reluctant to speak of these events, Hay House has been included by others in ghost anthologies, including Nancy Roberts’ Georgia Ghosts (1997) and those on various websites. In 2015, the house was named by Architectural Digest as one of the “13 Most Beautiful Haunted Destinations Around the World,” joining Edinburgh Castle and the Chateau de Brissac in the Loire Valley in making this list. Recognizing that the stories themselves are an important facet of our history and appeal, we are for the first time offering a special seasonal opportunity for visitors to enjoy.

As with most Behind the Scenes Tours of Hay House, this specialty tour will feature areas of Hay House that are not accessible on the regular tour such as the Wine Cellar, Attic, and Cupola. Guides will also explain the myths and realities of certain architectural features such as the Secret Room and the underground tunnels. The tour will also feature the original Springhouse, located under the nearby Harris-Hall-Bennett House, a site with stories of hauntings as well. The tour will also include various interpreters recounting tales of their experiences and those of others in Hay House’s Basement, Music Room, and especially the Second Floor Hall and Bedrooms.

The evening will be capped with wine and canapes in the historic Dining Room where board members and staff will be on hand to answer questions. Call 478-742-8155 for more information or visit our website www.hayhousemacon.org.

Please Note: The Georgia Trust is presenting what we hope is an enjoyable evening exploring the folklore of the house and does not warrant the truth or validity of any of the stories presented on this occasion.
